I have a few work trips coming up. Other than that, I’m hoping for a quiet month.
Our pediatrician said that despite having measles immunity, I’m not to go down to any of the hot zones while pregnant. Work is so thrilled 🙄 I have an inspection due soon down there, that I’ve tried twice to do, and had my accompanier bail on me. Not like I haven’t tried to do it..

Child-free work trips sound kind of nice!

I’m happy to report that J will now try carrot sticks and broccoli - sometimes he takes a bite and spits it out and other times he actually eats some. He also peels open a green bean and eats only the tiny little beans out of them. 😂

DD will be two next month! I can’t believe it. She is so different even from last year.

I have a question, I will put the disclaimer out there first, I am a worrier. DH has had to calm me down about a lot of things concerning DD. So, DD’s daycare is offering an Early Intervention screening for a fee. The screening is supposed to look overall physical, social and cognitive development. I’m wondering if I should pay to get DD screened. I do know she is very leery around strangers. For example, she had to get pictures on day 3. They took her over to meet the photographer twice and then the third day she was finally ready for pictures. So I’m worried if she’s leery about the person doing the screening she may not do well. I am curious to see how she does on the screening. Should I do it?

If it’s pricey, you can contact your county EI for a free eval -the mom who needed 4(!) evaluations before the evaluators realized just how much help her kid needed (and by that point, he came in at 3%tile)

ttcbabyj do you have any particular concerns for J? No, not really. I was concerned about her speech when she closer to 18 months, but I started writing down the words she was saying and I felt a lot less concerned. I am a bit concerned about her emotional intelligence, to be honest, she still lacks empathy. She will sign sorry and say it sometimes when she steps on your foot or something and you react. But she does not acknowledge a person or family members crying or being upset.

I listen to a podcast by a child psychologist and according to her kids don't really start developing empathy until closer to 3. And I am a little embarrassed to say that I have put in zero effort in teaching my kid the word or the concept of "sorry". For $40 I would say it couldn't hurt, except if you think she might freak out about the whole process with a stranger. I'm not familiar with these evaluations but can/will you or someone from daycare that she is familiar with her be there and would that help? Maybe you can talk to your daycare provider and see how they think she might do?

ttcbabyj, without really knowing anything about these evaluations (so take it with a bucket of salt), I would be inclined to skip it if your kid being wary of strangers might affect the results, in which case it would cause you to worry needlessly.

If she thinks there might be a delay, I’d call for an EI evaluation. IMO, $40 is not worth the 15-30 minutes they will spend screening your child. As it’s just a screen, if anything is found, you’d be referred to further evaluation anyway.

As for empathy, eh, that sort of starts around 3.5/4 years

I guess I was just expecting her to be a bit more cognizant of other people. Like she only really has “names” for me, DH and DSD. She kind of acts like other people don’t exist. I hope I’m not just rambling.

I kind of feeling like our current pedi dismisses my concerns because I’m a clinician. She kind of thinks it’s like medical school student syndrome.

We got new neighbors and they have kids DD's age. Yesterday they were outside playing so I told DD to go over and ask if she could play with them. She was entertained and out of my hair for almost an hour before dinner. It was fantastic! I'm hoping to invite the kids over to play in our big backyard the next time they are out. I'm one step closer to my goal of being the house where all the kids come so they can entertain DD for me.

I'm so glad it's finally outside play season here. I can send DS out with DH while I make dinner. We can walk to the park and not freeze our butts off. The farmers market starts tomorrow, which was our fave last summer. And our town is hosting its first Pride festival at the park near us tomorrow afternoon. YAY FOR BEING OUTDOORS!!

I’m still kind of up in the air with what we are doing for DD’s 2 birthday. I really kind of hate her birthday is right around the end of the semester. I’m trying to juggle grading with party planning..ugh.

Well DH and me just had a huge fight about DD’s possible evaluation. 😐 Oh no. Can I ask why? Well DH has always had a problem, I wouldn’t say problem but maybe grumblings about me being a psychologist by trade (I’m part time and mostly teach) In the past he has accused me of trying to “psychologize” people. At DD’s 15 month appointment I brought up some of my concerns regarding DD and our pediatrician kind of blew off my concerns saying something like clinicians make the worst parents of children...but like in a joking manner. So when I said I wanted to have DD evaluated because of some of her behaviors, he flew off the handle saying, she’s fine and I’m making something out of nothing. He’s like she’s just stubborn, spoiled and doesn’t like to be around strangers. All of this could be true, but there could also be some underlying issues as well. I’m like if we had a leak in the house wouldn’t you fix it (he’s a plumber). I don’t know he made me feel like I’m just over reacting. 🤷🏽♀️
