It's a separate dental plan. It's a local company that cut the university a pretty good deal. You might want to check and see if you have one under your medical insurance as well and if they might cover the X-ray, at least partially? I'm not sure how it works if you also have a separate dental insurance but I think my pediatric dental portion of my medical insurance is actually decent compared to the really shitty medical insurance that I have. The disconnect between providers and insurance is super annoying because you never know what will or will not be covered when services are offered. I would for sure not have wanted to do the X-ray if it would not have been considered part of a regular check up and not covered as such. I just checked out my medical insurance's dental rider, and it's also just bitewing, even for kids. Oh well. Now I know!

Also, J did really great at the dentist on Friday. I didn't love the dentist but the hygienist was good. They couldn't figure out my insurance for some reason and told me I had to pay out of pocket so then I left feeling like I had paid a lot of money for them to count his teeth and brush his teeth but it does look like I can submit the claim myself and get reimbursed. I might look for a new place for next time. They told me to make the next appointment for 6 months out - is that really what they recommend for kids too and is that how often you take your kids? Yes. DS2 is on a 2x per year cycle. DS1 goes 4x due to us not having fluoridated water and having some pre-cavity potential spots. He also is on special toothpaste with a higher fluoride content. I think at this age, they want to catch problem spots early. Also, as an FYI, it was our dentist who gave us the initial ENT referral for DS1’s tonsils..

@starzia how is your daughter feeling and is she going through with the procedure today? Good luck! Surgery went well. I cried. Maria cried for an hour since she has been awake. Threw up in her car seat. We are 10 minutes from home and she falls asleep. Hope it’s a calm rest of the day Other than the vomiting, this was my experience as well. They assured me the crying was normal and he wouldn’t remember any of it 🤷🏼♀️

We have fluoride in the water but he did also get the fluoride varnish. That makes sense that they want to catch any potential problems early to try and prevent them. I do think that I'm going to try a different dentist because I feel like I am just going to second guess everything she says, and maybe it is completely unfounded, but I don't think that is a good relationship to have with your healthcare provider.

I'm pretty sure the bitewing is bigger than my toddler's entire mouth. What moron came up with that plan? *I* have to use a kid sized one! Morons!

I know it's early and not super serious, but I good really use some good vibes and fingers crossed for DD. I stumbled upon the fact that we have public preschool in my town. Seriously no one knows about it. I just found a random link buried in the town's website while looking at something else. It's full day, affordable, 2 meals and snack provided, and they are heavily focused on language arts. It would be fantastic for DD and I really think it would challenge her in a good way. I'm falling out of love with our DC more and more each day. They just seem tired, if that makes sense, and DD walks all over the teachers because of it. We went last week for a tour and to register and the difference between the two facilities is absolutely night and day. I can not say enough good things about it. There is a waiting list and right now its really hard to tell if she would make it in the fall with the way the class turnover is. So I have everything crossed that the cards fall in our favor with this one.

There was a campaign in our area recently to educate the pediatricians on oral health and fluoride treatments specifically because it is such an easy piece of preventative dental care for kids and a lot of kids don't get to the dentist in the early years that it made more sense for the pediatricians to offer it. So it is definitely a thing but still a work in progress I think.

The YMCA in our area has a preschool program that I will eventually look more into. My nephew is in the Y program and my sister has been happy with it and I think it is relatively affordable.

She will stay where she is for now. We dropped her down to the preschool program for 5 days with an extra hour for play time M&W. The preschool program there is from 8-11 but it's like a joke in comparison. There is no set curriculum. The reason we dropped her down in hours is to save us some money. The public preschool would be $20 more per week than the lower rate we are paying now but we get SO MUCH more. It's basically full time for a little more than I pay for less than half time. I haven't found any program even remotely close in both price (huge driving factor for us) and curriculum. The Y here is similar to what we paid for full time DC and I wasn't that impressed with what it had to offer compared to our current DC. But I've found Ys are very, very different. The one all her playgroup buddies go to is really good but it's not local to us and the cost is higher. There's also one about a half hour away that is spectacular but again would not work in terms of locality.

We are obviously ways away from having to think about preschool (I mean who am I kidding, I've thought about it a lot). The daycare he is at now has a preschool program which I think is okay and he is waitlisted for another one that I really liked so we have some options.

So you never know.

FWIW we started DS1 at the dentist a little before he turned 3 I think. Our pediatric dental is part of our medical insurance and the closest actual pediatric dental practice is about 40 minutes away (like, pediatric exclusive, not family dental). I wanted him to LIKE going there because I fucking hate the dentist. So, driving 40 minutes for a good time it is.
But we go every 6 months. The first visit or 2 they just counted, talked about dental health, fluoride paint at the end. The did xrays at one point and he was luckily fine with them. We've been fortunate that he hasn't had any issues so they've been pleasant experiences.
I guess I'll take DS2 next year. I should see if theres anything closer now though because our insurance changed about a year and a half ago so maybe there are new (closer) providers....

@chickencoop have you asked your pediatrician about the fluoride varnish? I think applying fluoride directly on the teeth is more effective than drinking it in the water.

DS2 will be 2 in two weeks. No drops here. They both get the brushed on stuff 2x a year (well, DS1 has been bumped to 4 times now). They both use fluoride toothpaste when brushing and DS1 gets a second coat with the special toothpaste and also a fluoride mouthwash now that he can spit. I’m asking for tablets at his next checkup

So J has started screech screaming for fun. Sometimes it's just high-pitched but not that loud, and other times it is high-pitched and loud. When we are out, like at a restaurant, we tell him to keep his voice down because other people are trying to enjoy their meals. Do I shut it down at home too? Only if it is too loud or any screaming? When it is really loud at home I tell him it hurts my ears or that he's scaring the cats. Should he be allowed to yell anywhere?

I mean yelling outside is one thing, but screaming is a different thing. I was raised that you could only scream if you were bleeding to death or being kidnapped. I basically make the same rules with DD. The noise you described can easily turn into screaming and yeah, I just can't with that. It immediately raises my anxiety so I stop it. Thankfully DD doesn't really like loud noises so she doesn't scream/screech for fun, only when she's pissed and she wants a reaction.

My H has been working late every night so I have been getting up with J every morning for I don't even remember how long. He always seems unhappy with what I serve him for breakfast for one reason or another (most of them inexplicable, since most days I give him what he asks for) and pushes the food away and cries and whines. Until I leave the room. I leave the room and he stops fussing and starts eating almost right away. What the heck. I guess I'll just give him a bowl of oatmeal and go back to bed.

Recently My DD will request a food. And immediately dump it on the floor. And I would like that to stop now. What do I even do about that? Just about 20 months old. Toddlers man. I would tell her before you hand her the food that the plate/bowl/food stays on the table. And then be ready to grab her hands as she tries to dump the food and take it away.
