We also didn't have GPAs. Or at least we didn't back in the late 90s early 2000s. We just had an overall numerical grade which translated to a GPA, but when submitting transcripts, it was just a weighted number (i.e. 92) versus a 3.0. this just sounds like some new age, helicopter parent policies to prevent kids from being too stressed out. We didn't use a 4.0 scale either- just percentage grades.

No. It was pointedly not available for anyone, internally or externally to submit to colleges. This is interesting. Did you have a valedictorian/salutatorian? They would have to know...

We had a valedictorian and a salutatorian but other than that, nada. Well, again, I'm sure it was technically there but no one knew. This is likely a mechanism by the school to avoid active engagement with the exact kind of parents that are involved in this indictment. High powered, very wealthy individuals that don't get told "no" often and won't take "no" for an answer when discussing how two people with the same course load and same GPA are ranked 5 and 6 or whatever. Hah, I should have kept reading.

No. It was pointedly not available for anyone, internally or externally to submit to colleges. My HS did this too. It was a small, competitive private school. They recognized a valedictorian, but that wasn’t useful for applications because it wasn’t announced until commencement. The school’s college counselor provided a statement explaining their rationale and other unusual school policies with our application materials.

We used a 4.0 scale but then honors classes were out of 5.0... I don’t think too many schools did this. I know my husband’s high school didn’t.

My rural school didn't have many resources but they did offer AP Latin via distance ed. I found that pretty interesting, that they chose to use limited resources to offer Latin.

Yeah, mine was a bunch of farmers and small town people. The banker had a kid in my class, but he was in the top 5 on his own, so no need to grease any wheels there.

IME 20 years ago applying to mostly private schools, it was really common to have a sliding scale for GPA and standard test scores. Like, if you had a 1300 SAT and 3.8 GPA you got X, if you had 1300 SAT and 3.5 GPA you got Y, etc.
that's all i really have to contribute.

I also don't think there was any move to reduce stress. I went to an insanely competitive high school full of kids with uber Type A parents, so I do not think measures to alleviate stress were considered. People paid well into 5 figures for private college counselors and professional essay editors so it was a high stress environment. maybe a measure to alleviate the stress of teachers and staff who had to deal with these insufferable parents on a daily basis. 😂

MH went to prep school in NYC. I just asked him, he was ranked. Think I can call the school and have his transcripts here by dinner?

Rank would have been a competitive disadvantage to everyone but the top 2 students. The school was very into bragging about where it sent its students, so anything that affected the number of kids it could get into the elite privates would have hurt its rep and bottom line. And yes, I know this is all ridiculous and privileged. Such was life at my HS.

Friends Seminary because they are touchy-feely. I almost went to a Friend’s school in high school. At last minute, my mom changed her mind because she decided I needed structure ... and I would eat the Quakers alive.

I was camp-friends with a girl who went to Friends in NYC and she was the fucking weirdest chick. Friends schools are the norm in PA. They’re everywhere. My dad went for a minute and my Grandmom pulled him out when she stopped by the school and found my dad wandering the halls. She asked why and he said, “they’re taking a test and I don’t feel like doing it.”

Such was life at my HS. this was true of my school as well. They published where everyone went to school at the very end of the year and talked about acceptance rates, etc. As a further confession, the preschool where we currently send our kids is fanatical about this information and where the kids go to school after they leave PRESCHOOL. Like publish all the private schools and how many applied, were accepted, were waitlisted, were admitted off the waitlist. I thoroughly enjoy the reiteration annually that we didn't apply anywhere and are sending our kids to public school and fuck off. was your high school public or private?

my high school was public but... not really. It was kind of a public magnet school? I guess today it might be considered a charter school but that model wasn't really prominent back in those days. If you lived in my town you could go there, but there were significant barriers to entry to living in the town. Which presents an entirely other kind of discussion/argument to all of this. If you lived in any of the neighboring towns, you were not allowed to go there. This might be more regional because down here, schools are zoned across multiple "towns" as one might call them (although I guess they are more neighborhoods). CT is very distinct in its towns. so there was a school for anyone who live in the city and then this school? Or just hard requirements about needing a particular address in order to enroll? We have both of that kind of stuff in our public schools here. Charters are a whole different beast.

I feel equal amounts of anger at Aunt Becky and Felicity. But for different reasons.
Felicity for either not spending enough time in her DD's first 16 years to try to help her do for herself, or for not letting her daughter sink or swim at the school best matches to her academic abilities. Not everyone gets a spot at an elite school, missy.
Aunt Becky for raising a vapid, vain, do-nothing child who wants to take the best of what's available and shit on everything else.

I can't decide if I'm the kid who is the recipient of all of this if I'm upset with my parents or no. Like in the example of Felicity Huffman, it seems her daughter was genuinely wanting to make it but just couldn't but in the example of Aunt Becky... well... it's not the same. Sidebar confession I basically spiraled all the way back through Olivia Jade's instragram last night. I just finished going through her IG. She is stunningly beautiful. She should have just stuck with the social media career route.

She said something like she was going to have a chat with the Dean to discuss the fact that she didn't want to really go to those pesky classes, just the social life aspects.

I feel like she would’ve been fine going the Kardashian route and just skipping college

Class rank is SRS BSNSS here. They all know their exact rank. They will raise holy hell if they drop even one spot.

I wish they were as prevalent in NY as they are in PA because there are some incredible schools in PA that I would send my kid to in a heartbeat.
