$46,340 for tuition and $67,580 for tuition, room, board, and fees combined. For just one year. Lort. Mine is still $26k for the total package. In what world does that seem like a deal?

I had to choose between 14k a year to go to the private school of my dreams or getting paid a stipend after all my tuition, room, and meals were covered at the state school with a great honors program.
I was stupid at 18, but at least I made one good choice.

I'm tempted to send my parents a $500,000 invoice for getting myself into college. That's the going rate, right? I think it depends how much they love you...

I had a friend in high school who took the SAT for other kids. It wasn’t exactly a master plan, looking back I’m shocked they didn’t get caught. In this case it was lazy kids who paid him, so he definitely wasn’t making thousands.
He also sold drugs, I should not have been hanging out with that kid 😂

Thinking about how many kids in my city go to private or boarding schools (we have some really good ones). I would say the tuition and fees average $40k per year, per child (grade 3 and under is much less, but still relatively unattainable). Now, imagine multiple kids. What do these people do for a living?? My god.

I just looked at Aunt Becky's kid's IG. There are comments on every single picture calling her a cunt, telling her she deserves the death penalty, blah blah blah. It goes years back. The Internet is such a weird place. They were like, "oh someone was a horrible person? We can be more horrible."

I just checked the current tuition from my school. It doesn't seem that much higher than when I went there. Which means I'm either misremembering how much it cost when I was there or their tuition increases have been small. I know everyone will say I'm misremembering but I'm choosing to think that my friendly Jesuits are great human beings. my school was technically a Jesuit school, so it's not that. maybe city Jesuits are greater than suburb Jesuits.

You guys who have never been to a big college football game are missing out. I will see your big college football game and raise you college marching band. ::nerd:: My favorite part of going to college football games is the half time show with the marching bands. I love football but I’m not leaving my seat till after the halftime show.

What do these people do for a living?? My god. We talk about this a lot in my family and circle of friends. Around here there is a tremendous amount of grandparents that basically foot the bill for the grandkids tuition. But really what’s shitty about the whole thing is that a lot of the private schools here are very competitive but they can ultimately work against you at college time. My big thing is if I’m spending upwards of $300,000 on an education BEFORE COLLEGE then I want to provide a list of 10 colleges and if my child is not admitted to at least one of them I want a full refund. Because what the fuck did I pay for? You’re just speaking for me today. We were just having this conversation about a local high school.

I am just going to stop watching the news and defer to you about this case moving forward LOL! I read the whole thing last night while watching two episodes of The Walking Dead and this season's premiere of MasterChef Junior, so my assessment and opinions may not be top-notch. But I did live-instastory all my thoughts and commentary. This is what I get for not being insta-friends with anyone. I have no clue what’s going on!

Really what you are paying for is the network and circle of influence which is equally, if not more, important than the name of the school on your college diploma. Which is also fucked but that’s basically the theme of this thread. Yup. It’s insane My husband’s high school alumni network is significantly better than most undergrad networks (and blows mine out of the water- both high school and undergrad)

Everything I learned about Friends schools I learned from this thread. 😂 Same, I’m like what the hell, American media immersion you have failed me! I’m going to spiral hard on this today. If it helps, I'm 100% USA born and raised and learned about Friends schools here in this thread. They don't have them out West, though. Just Mormon seminaries on every high school grounds. It makes sense, though, that a large and influential religion in an area would have schools. Catholic schools, Christian schools, BYU...

I've honestly thought about having my kid(s) go the route where they do the program at a CC where they get guaranteed admission into a UC if they complete the requirements. Esp since my kids also have tuition waivers for CA public universities. That would save a ton of money. ETA: it's only for the these 6 UCs: Davis Irvine Merced Riverside Santa Barbara Santa Cruz I think that this is so smart. I hope that CCs get more traction nationwide. They fill such a need and can be a great jumping off point. Many of them have programs and incentives for low income students to earn assoc degrees or certifications for specific programs at no cost. Yes. I went to a CC, lived at home, $1,500/semester plus books. Then after my first year I got the GPA based tuition wavier so it was more like $300/semester plus books. I graduated with a useful degree and had a job in my degree field that fall. People look at me like I'm the goose that laid the golden egg when I say I never had student loans.... and boy am I fucking glad I went the route I did and don't.

I just looked it up. Tuition has risen to $1,900 a semester for a full load at my Alma Mater. Fees additional, I'm assuming.

Well I hope so dude because you easily dropped like $30-40k each on them from age 4-18. And I'm sure I'm low balling.

I was inspired to look up UCLA's current tuition and it's $13,000 per academic year now, plus another $15,000 for room and board if you live in the dorms. That's only about twice what it was when I was there 20 years ago.

Reading through this thread makes me all sorts of confused, the Canadian university process is so much easier. Agreed. If you are and A student, the captain of the volleyball team and volunteered on Saturdays with the local Girl Scout troop, you can basically secure a position in one of the top 5 schools. Lol. Canada so basic, and I love it.

There are not actually any of those in town, so thankfully point is moot.

I work at a community college and the support networks are huge! As much as I want my kids to have the uni experience and connections, two free years at CC while living at home, working and banking $$ will set them up better in life than any of us taking out loans. I got screwed in the financial planning, student loan department and I just don’t want them to have to have the same thing looming as I did.
