Even in the 10 years since I graduated from UC, the numbers have gotten out of control. Like 4-10% increases EVERY YEAR. I can't. I mean, I just don't know how long it can go on that way. It's really nuts. It is absolutely ridiculous.

Even in the 10 years since I graduated from UC, the numbers have gotten out of control. Like 4-10% increases EVERY YEAR. I can't. I was at a UC for 9 years and the price for tuition more than tripled during that time. It was insane. There were essentially riots on campus at one point over it. Some of the profs in my department actually got arrested protesting. I love living in states with strong state university systems. The UC system is amazing. Virginia is pretty awesome too. I’d be thrilled to send my kids to a state school here. I would love for my kids to go to a UC, but at that point it will probably be the same cost as a private school.

If you guys want to read about more school cheating scandals, India, China and Korea have some good ones. It’s super competitive and parents will go to even more extreme lengths. For example hiring someone who looks like their kid to go write tests as an imposter so they can get in.
Like @jozrky I’m just amazed at the cost and how the system in the US works. I had decent marks went to an average high school and got into 2 of the top Universities in the country, not in competitive programs, I would have needed higher marks.

From what I've seen though (bc of partner's son's road) is that many private schools will give the student money to go there. It might even make private school the cheaper option in those cases.

We had rankings and GPAs. The first four had to do something at graduation.
It was a tight race. I was 5th and my GPA was over 4.0.

What a pickle.... Do the entitled kids of these parents admit they knew what was going on? and perhaps risk further shame, expulsion, etc? Or play dumb? <---- not actually playing dumb, the real deal!

You guys talking college cost, sats, acts, and high school gpas without me?
I was co-valedictorian for my high school with above 4.0 due to college credit.
My son's school didn't acknowledge a valedictorian. Or what # you were on grades. The speakers at graduation were selected by the administration from those who wrote speeches in a high school class.

I knew about Germantown High School from my time in the late 90's when I was deeply ingrained in competitive high school cheerleading. They were National Champions many times. You're Welcome for that bit of info.

It is one of my life goals that my kid(s) goes to CAL, UCLA, UCI, UCSD or UCSB. Even Davis or Santa Cruz. I just really love the public school system here.

My parents were able to completely cover my tuition, books, rent and food while I was at a UC and my dad is a fireman, mom worked in a book store. I don't see that as a remote possibility for us now, and between myself and H we make what, on paper, looks like a HUGE amount of money.

I also don't think there was any move to reduce stress. I went to an insanely competitive high school full of kids with uber Type A parents, so I do not think measures to alleviate stress were considered. People paid well into 5 figures for private college counselors and professional essay editors so it was a high stress environment. My high school was also very competitive and did not rank students so maybe that means something.

I'm glad my high school did not rank because I did not do well there. My parents would have been very very disappointed.

The Friends school in our area (only goes to 8th grade) looks lovely but I don't think I could afford to send my kid there.

Can I just mention how incredibly difficult it is to navigate (the US) school system?
I moved 3 times in highschool. Some schools had weighted GPAs for advanced or AP classes, some were on a 10 point grading system and some where on an 8 point (meaning if you got a 92 in a class that's a B). Some schools didn't have the same requirements to graduate and some didn't offer classes on the same schedule (this is how I ended up missing trig).
Like when kids are applying to colleges they really may be comparing apples to oranges.
End rant*

I heard a vague rumor that working for UC might be a discount on tuition for my kids, but I need to check into it further. If so, I guess I stay here for lyfe.

My mom was a nurse and my dad in the military and somehow swung my books and room and board (tuition was covered for me because my dad has a disability from the military and their dependents get tuition waivers for CA public school). Somehow they made it work even though economically we were VERY working class. I think of paying 4-6k a month, in today's dollars, for my kids college education and I'm like meep.

I've honestly thought about having my kid(s) go the route where they do the program at a CC where they get guaranteed admission into a UC if they complete the requirements. Esp since my kids also have tuition waivers for CA public universities. That would save a ton of money. ETA: it's only for the these 6 UCs: Davis Irvine Merced Riverside Santa Barbara Santa Cruz

That speech was so awful though and marked the beginning of my downward spiral.

Not to discount the success of your class, but I'm curious as to how many people were in your graduating class? Did all 12 kids go to top notch schools or all 209? Look up Sidwell, Germantown Friends, George School or Moorestown and look at their notable alumni. Friends schools are known for this. Yes, I'm familiar with Sidwell. It's an extremely elite school that of course will feed into the top universities. I'm always curious about the sample size of these kind of statistics, which is why I asked. Stats fascinate me and always leave me with more questions😊

You're Welcome for that bit of info. Well. To be really complicated, there’s 3 Germantowns in Philly. Germantown Academy (a private school), Germantown Friends (discussed above) and Germantown High School (a public school which closed 5 years ago). But I don’t think any of them were national cheer champions? (I cheered competitively in the area at the time).

One of the classes a couple years ahead of me had a kid that declined valedictorian because he didn't want to give the speech. It was definitely not his thing.
