We may need to have a members-only page here for valedictorians and ACT/SAT top scorers. I fully expected a comment like this lol. I almost didn’t even say anything, but it was relevant to the conversation... I find it endearing, truly.

I just checked the current tuition from my school. It doesn't seem that much higher than when I went there. Which means I'm either misremembering how much it cost when I was there or their tuition increases have been small. I know everyone will say I'm misremembering but I'm choosing to think that my friendly Jesuits are great human beings.

Went to another university in PA amish country to add an art teaching credential and added the equivalent of a minor in weaving (how practical!). ETA, later went back again to get a masters in teaching and a special education credential, which is what I actually use.

I have a student right now who has been offered free tuition to go to a CC and perform in their choir. She’s already been accepted into Alabama but she goofed around and missed the scholarship deadline. All of her friends are going to Alabama. She’s already paid $700 in registration fees, had housing, etc. She’s decided to go to the CC because it will save her over $40,000 in tuition over the course of 2 years. It seems obvious that it’s a good choice for her, but she’s really struggling with the other kids and the perception of CC. Every kid I teach that’s going to a CC seems embarrassed. I tell them how smart they are. ETA: I did not go to CC. It was basically the 13th grade for my high school and I had to get out. Tuition my freshman year was $2800. Sigh. I hate that that is the perception of CC. Not everyone needs a pricey 4 year degree.

Oh for what? I went to art school . I have a fine art degree from Rutgers (the state U of NJ) and let me count the ways in which it did not pay off, lol. I think it’s generally better, if one is going to go to school for art, to pursue it in a liberal arts environment than a straight-up art school, so I’d argue that you did it right! Trends in art today veer toward the interdisciplinary, and a larger university will have science, poli sci, literature, etc departments that you can take classes in, meet people to collaborate with, etc. Plus, it’s hard to advise someone, particularly at an undergraduate level, to specialize in an area (to the point of going to a school specific for it) without a clear employment path for graduates. (As opposed to say, engineering.) And, even artists who are critically successful are usually still not able to financially support themselves with their art for a sustained period. Financial success comes in waves of a couple of years at a time, if it comes at all. That said, MH did his undergrad at an art school, and he uses his degree and is doing just fine. So it can work out.

I just looked up the in state tuition for my Alma mater and it’s almost doubled since I was there.
Fun fact. I got an almost full ride scholarship to my school, which is why I stayed in state, and I lost it within the first year. I went completely off the rails my freshman and sophomore year. I’d never seen my mom lose her shit like that before. She didn’t even get that angry at my brother for getting kicked out of the same school for repeatedly smoking pot in his dorm.
Eta So. Student loans 🙋🏼♀️

I had a similar experience with the Mom Rage. She didn't rage that hard when my brother had to go back to finish his senior project to graduate with an engineering degree...he was already a manager at a company, but had to take a leave of absence to complete his degree. I didn't go off the rails until after undergrad, but I did drop out of a full ride school because I hated the main instructor in my program. I could probably have changed programs, but that would have been too logical. Instead I wracked up 30K in loans for my BA in the next four years. My mom said she would help me pay those off, but that never happened. Thankfully I got a chunk of money out of our house sale and was able to knock it out.

I just looked up the in state tuition for my Alma mater and it’s almost doubled since I was there. Mine is working on 3x when I started. It's more than out of state graduate tuition was then. Fees are up. Housing is ridiculous. Parking is absurd. But they think $500/semester will cover books. Sure it will.

So did Felicity and Becky know the indictment was coming? I know often the wealthy/powerful are aware of investigations and can hide behind their legal team. It seems like they were totally unaware. Thoughts? soup have you read your 3 ring binder yet? I am done reading all 204 pages of the affidavit in support of the criminal complaint. There is no indication in the affidavit that Huffman or Loughlin was aware anything was coming, but an affidavit of this nature wouldn't reveal anything like that anyway. The affidavit primarily detailed the nature of the schemes and the recorded telephone conversations between Rick Singer and the respective named defendants. This document was submitted to establish probable cause that these defendants conspired to commit fraud.

My school became super competitive very soon after I started. I just looked it up and the average ACT is 31-34. It’s also up about 20k from what it was 15 yrs ago.

I read the whole thing last night while watching two episodes of The Walking Dead and this season's premiere of MasterChef Junior, so my assessment and opinions may not be top-notch. But I did live-instastory all my thoughts and commentary.
