Well. To be really complicated, there’s 3 Germantowns in Philly. Germantown Academy (a private school), Germantown Friends (discussed above) and Germantown High School (a public school which closed 5 years ago). But I don’t think any of them were national cheer champions? (I cheered competitively in the area at the time). I...just realized you guys did not mean Germantown, Tennessee. Lolllll. We can fight about that school next?

It never crossed my mind that I could have declined giving a speech as valedictorian of my middle school, which was the highlight of my academic career. That speech was so awful though and marked the beginning of my downward spiral. One of the classes a couple years ahead of me had a kid that declined valedictorian because he didn't want to give the speech. It was definitely not his thing. I guess I wouldn't have gone that far. I got a medal and my name on a plaque, woo!

I heard a vague rumor that working for UC might be a discount on tuition for my kids, but I need to check into it further. If so, I guess I stay here for lyfe. I've honestly thought about having my kid(s) go the route where they do the program at a CC where they get guaranteed admission into a UC if they complete the requirements. Esp since my kids also have tuition waivers for CA public universities. That would save a ton of money. ETA: it's only for the these 6 UCs: Davis Irvine Merced Riverside Santa Barbara Santa Cruz Oh interesting, I hadn't heard about this. I know when I was in HS, there was a program that if you were ranked in the top 4% of students in the state, you were guaranteed admission to one UC, although not necessarily of your choosing. I have no idea how they calculated this or if the program even still exists. I think my automatic acceptance was UC Riverside.

I can't find much on it so it may not be true. Darn. It’s definitely true for some private schools. My best friend works at Stanford and if she had kids they would get free tuition if they got in there — and I believe they can also get that tuition applied to any other school they choose to attend. She has no kids, and doesn’t want any, so our plan is for her to adopt my kids when they reach college age. Just kidding (sort of).

My mom teaches at my alma mater and for that my fees were reduced by about $1800 a semester. Of course I also lived at home so there were a lot of cost savings that way.

@karenwalker, Cher I could be confusing Germantown Academy and Germantown Tennessee. I tried to look up some of the national camps went to but Google failed me on the 90's high school cheerleading front. I did find awesome low res Youtube videos though.

My university will pay for tuition there, or a percentage anywhere else in the country. I will sweep floors if that's what it takes to continue working for them.

We’ve discussed MH getting a security job at one after he retires, which someone he knows did. And forcing my kids to go there.

Matt Ryan went to William Penn Charter High School in Philly, which is the oldest Quaker school in the world. My uncle teaches there! Used to be the head soccer coach. Back to reading the thread.

Can we get some names of people who attended a Quaker school and then went on to play collegiate athletics? This might be PA-specific but they were known for having amazing athletic programs. Like in PA, a Friends school is prestigious AF. PA plus DC! MH went to a Quaker college. I was sincerely saying that I like them.

You guys talking college cost, sats, acts, and high school gpas without me? I was co-valedictorian for my high school with above 4.0 due to college credit. My son's school didn't acknowledge a valedictorian. Or what # you were on grades. The speakers at graduation were selected by the administration from those who wrote speeches in a high school class. Interesting. As valedictorian, I was a default speech giver at graduation. I assume I could have turned it down, but it was pretty much a given. The salutatorian gave a speech, too. Smartypants!

Me and my BIL were just talking about the price of colleges now and when we were enrolled. We couldn’t figure out what the cap could finally be where it’s deemed “too expensive”. I can’t even image what the system will be like for my DS in 17 years.
I went to Hawaii Pacific for only one semester for a few reasons. One, being one semester cost 14 grand. That was 10 years ago and now it’s closer to 25 grand per semester.

I work at a university that has tuition benefits (may or may not be involved in this scandal) and I've heard rumors of aunt's/uncle's adopting kids at 17 to get tuition benefits. I basically am settling in for the long haul bc our benefits pay 2/3 tuition if they get in here, or they will pay whatever 1/3 of tuition is to go anywhere else..which currently is $16k per year, per kid. That'd go further at a state school that the 2/3 since room and board is crazy here, so hoping to go that route. Just need to not go crazy in the next 21 years...

Us too, Well we did have the Student council president make a speech, not just the top students in the class. he did his whole speech in a British accent. Now they want to feature students that aren't just top of their class but perhaps the best student speakers, or whatever. They submit their speeches ahead of time, students wanted to vote on the best, but instead the principal chose best. so the best student then did a totally different speech on stage than what was approved. At least part of it about how the principal sucked--principal was actually fired a few weeks later. lol.

We may need to have a members-only page here for valedictorians and ACT/SAT top scorers.

My school was under the sea. We had to listen to a chorus concert from Tritan’s daughters like every goddamn day. I just wanted to let you know I went to school with sea royalty.

They fill such a need and can be a great jumping off point. Many of them have programs and incentives for low income students to earn assoc degrees or certifications for specific programs at no cost.

I would love for my kids to go to a UC, but at that point it will probably be the same cost as a private school. It does already, doesn't it? My parents were able to completely cover my tuition, books, rent and food while I was at a UC and my dad is a fireman, mom worked in a book store. I don't see that as a remote possibility for us now, and between myself and H we make what, on paper, looks like a HUGE amount of money. Feel weird “liking” this comment, but I graduated from Berkeley with very minimal debt which was mostly due to being a jackass who didn’t want to work for my senior year. The other years I held part time odd jobs and worked over the summer. I feel like now that would cover books.

The downside though is that they wouldn't get that full blown college experience. I know some people brush this off but those first 2 years of college for me (dorm life, greek life etc) I had some of my best memories! I guess we will cross that bridge if and when it comes. But I definitely agree with you that it is such a great value and opportunity for kids that might not otherwise even go to college bc of economic barriers.

I think if you completed the general ed requirements (IGETC) and got decent enough grades you were all but guaranteed a spot. Like maybe not guaranteed-guaranteed but you’d really have to dog it to not get in.

It’s far and away one of the best high schools in the state, which makes sense given the university’s proximity and the education professors want for their children. ETA: there are all sorts of incentives to do well on the ACT. A 30 on the English portion allows you to skip ENG 101 at most state universities. I can’t remember if it’s a 32 or 33 that allows you skip all freshmen English. So, in addition to earning a scholarship, you also have to take fewer classes and can graduate sooner, which, I did not want to do because I could already tell being an adult was going to suck. Unless it counts as credits, that just means they have to take a different English class. Like how my math entrance test put me in MATH 104. That didn't mean I got credit for 101 and 102, or that I could skip math completely because mine required 102. I still had to take a class for the credits toward graduation. I wouldn't have had the right amount of credits otherwise. That was absolutely not a thing at my state u 20 years ago. Maybe it's newer. Maybe mine is a bunch of jerks (highly possible). Mine was like that from 2006-2010. 3 different colleges all did the same.

I have a student right now who has been offered free tuition to go to a CC and perform in their choir. She’s already been accepted into Alabama but she goofed around and missed the scholarship deadline. All of her friends are going to Alabama. She’s already paid $700 in registration fees, had housing, etc. She’s decided to go to the CC because it will save her over $40,000 in tuition over the course of 2 years. It seems obvious that it’s a good choice for her, but she’s really struggling with the other kids and the perception of CC. Every kid I teach that’s going to a CC seems embarrassed. I tell them how smart they are.
ETA: I did not go to CC. It was basically the 13th grade for my high school and I had to get out. Tuition my freshman year was $2800. Sigh.
