UPDATED THREAD TITLE—Here is where we can discuss any and all things related to post-partum care.
I’m kicking it off with a post that is about poop and contains lots of TMI, but also a pot of gold.
So you guys remember how I delivered at a different hospital this time than with my first two babies? Well, the new hospital has their shit figured out, literally, and I want to share because everyone should have this info.
After delivery, my old hospital gave me Colace and Motrin orally, and provided witch hazel pads, Dermoplast, and dibucaine ointment for topical use. We went home when DS was 2 days old and that night I tried to have my first PP poop. To this day it is one of the worst things I ever have experienced. I was horribly constipated (partially due I think to the antibiotics I had to have for GBS) and between that and the stitches, the couple doses of Colace they had given me did nothing. It took more than a week before I could go without awful pain.
Because of this, before I had DD I started taking Colace around 38 weeks to try to head it off. I also took a generic “gentle laxative” from CVS once I got home. It worked okay. The first PP poop was nowhere near as traumatizing as the first had been, but was still hard to pass and very painful.
Fast forward to 4 days ago in my new hospital. Immediately after birth they started giving me a whole cocktail of goodies and I would like to report that pooping has been not only easy, but also completely painless this time around despite that I actually have more stitches than I did the other times. It didn’t cause even one drop of blood. I can hardly believe it. I’m 4 days PP and going every day, completely regular and normal and pain-free.
So here is what they are giving me, and if your hospital isn’t going to give it to you I strongly suggest you ask them for it or pick it up yourself (everything is OTC). [And obviously you guys know I’m not a doctor and you should make sure this combo is okay for your unique med history and situation first.]
Docusate sodium (Colace) - one 100 mg capsule twice a day Polyethylene glycol (Miralax) - 17 g per day Senna (Senokot) - two 8.6 mg tablets nightly Simethicone (Mylicon) - 80 mg every 6 hours as needed (this one apparently is for bloating/gas relief)
Enjoy 😊👍🏻💩

I was just think today that no one has really talked about PP care and pooping etc. I agree with all this. Especially if you take narcotics for pain because they make constipation worse. Hydration is also key to helping those meds work. I took my own colace last time so I wasn't charged for it by the hospital. I do fiber capsules right now every night and will probably up it some closer to my csection.

Thank you!! Adding some of these to my grocery list. I already rely on fiber gummies and occasional colace thanks to my iron supplements, but some additional tools will come in handy at home.

When I had laparoscopic surgery, for a few days before and then maybe a week after I took a gas X 6 times per day and a colace 4 times per day (or maybe that was switched, I'd have to go check), other laxatives don't go well with my Crohn's... And it worked out great, I pooed painlessly a couple days after surgery. Also I think the consistent gas x really helped prevent the referred shoulder pain. So I was planning to try the same and was just hoping the hospital wouldn't know/care/have an opinion on me self medicating.

tngrl3 yes yes you reminded me I had received some narcotics during my hospital stay with DS1 so that definitely contributed to the constipation. P.S.-my predictive text is a prude and doesn’t recognize “constipation” 🙄

I’m going to change this into a general PP care thread if that’s okay with everyone.

dashook this advice is certainly worth gold. I’m quite terrified of my first PP poo lol

Oh man. I didn't think my first PP poop was terrible with DS1 but felt it was WAY worse with DS2. I'll be adding these to my go bag....

Yes! With all 3 I asked for stool softeners at the hospital. This time I had been constipated throughout 3rd tru so I was really nervous for after. at the hospital I also made sure to drink a decent amount of apple juice and avoided the bananas they sent with meals.

It's a smart discussion, and the after-effect I forget most and then pay for dearly later! I had so many drugs in my system after from the hemorrhage, this is a smart thing to prepare for this time.
My favorite postpartum thing is the flexible ice bags they have for your nether regions, where you break it and it turns cold? I begged for as many as I could get, it helped my pain and swelling so much to have those for a few days after!

Even after my swelling went down they still felt really soothing around my stitches. I’ve heard of people making their own, basically taking a maxi pad, soaking it in witch hazel then freezing it. But I was never that motivated plus it seems like they would release a lot of moisture as they thawed? The break-in-the-bag ones are where it’s at.

You are my new favorite person ever. Thank you! I was literally begging every nurse to load me up last time! dashook I heard about the maxi pad method too and agree, it seemed messy.

Something that helped me last time was having a peri-rinse bottle, tucks, etc. in each bathroom. I never ended up abandoned on the toilet without my supplies. New this time: I just ordered this yesterday. We’ll see if the rave reviews are true!

I'm bumping this up as a reminder since there looks to be another round of babies coming in the next week or 2. I am so glad I took my own fiber and Colace to the hospital. No one ever offered me anything to help with constipation/gas. I started taking stuff the night before my csection though and am so glad I did. Made that first poo so much easier. Also water is your friend, stay hydrated to help the meds work!

My recovery has been pretty rough so far. I think it’s extra tough since I labored for two entire days before having the c-section. I can’t do anything by myself because of the pain. MH is having to put on my mesh underwear and change my pads haha I hope one day he can see me as a sexy wife again and not this current wreck of a body. Mostly he seems grateful what I went through to bring our son into the world so I am thankful for that.
I have one particular place on my belly that hurts so bad when I try to get up and down. But I took my first pp poo last night so I’m counting that as a victory. It was not a lot of fun but I’m glad the first one is out of the way. Little victories!

strawberrykiki I’m sorry you’re in so much pain. Your body has been through hell and then surgery on top of it. I’m glad YH is being helpful. I promise you, he has discovered a newfound love and appreciation for you. I remember feeling like I couldn’t believe what MH saw during my labor and delivery with DS1, but he constantly talks about how amazed he was at what I could and did do to bring our children into the world. I hope you can get some rest and you’re feeling better ASAP.

strawberrykiki, I am sorry. CS recovery is no joke. Keep taking it as easy as you possibly can. It gets better. I labored before my CS as well and I remember that double whammy recovery. Hang in there!

Anyone have recommendations for a good postpartum belly band? I know it’s going to take time to get my body back but if those belly wrap things really help I’d be willing to give it a shot. TIA

TIA I asked for some BellyBandit stuff for Christmas. I started using their belly wrap and the Mother Tucker leggings a couple days after V was born and am very happy with them.

cch dashook I Have the belly bandit and I’ve been wearing it everyday. I like it. Mine came with a little pack that can be used hot or cold which is helpful. My belly has gone way down and I have all this lovely flab now. Yay.

Lurking from March 19. My nurse just made me something called prune tea and...it did the trick like magic. I feel so glad that first poop is behind me. Birth or pumping made me starving and I hadn't pooped in 2 days despite having eaten everything in sight.
Prune tea did the trick. Plus coalace.
