J has been really good about bedtime for a while now but recently he’s been wanting to read more books and protests when I tell him it’s bedtime. He does still fall asleep fine though, at least for now. We usually aim for 7:30 bedtime. I feel like we already read quite a few books and I don’t want to drag out the bedtime routine any longer. We don’t tend to read outside of our bed and nap time routines and I’m thinking we need to change that but he is usually pretty wound up during the day to sit down and read.

Really?!?! The closest I've seen is the "mad" episode where daddy tiger gets upset because they went to the water without asking. Yeah, it made a few articles because a lot of people were like “the horror!!” Hahahahahahahaha yes the horror that parents may sometimes lose their temper.

We do two books and that's it. If it's a big book then it's 1. It's easy to spiral with too many books and then bedtime takes forever. I suggest picking a number and sticking with it.

As Sheila said, pick a number and stick with it. DS2 usually gets 3 books, all relatively short. If they’re longer or I’m just not feeling well, I knock to 2. I do him solo DS1 gets 3 stories from DH, one from me. It used to be 3 from me only, but then I had to travel for work and he decided wanted DH for the 3 and one from me still

piratecat +whatever to sticking to a certain number of books. We do 3 books (although DS2 usually can only hang for 2 books) and then lights out. We do let DS1 look at a book in bed after we leave the room if he wants to.

Thanks everyone. I'm gonna start doing 3 books at bedtime and maybe read more before or after dinner instead. He also insists on reading the same book over and over back to back so sometimes I end up reading the same one 3 times and then I guess he will be done. Speaking of books, what are your kids' favorites? I really need to start borrowing some books from the library but then I get overwhelmed with the choices. Some of J's favorites are Jon Klassen's hat trilogy, The Princess and the Pony, and The Wall in the Middle of the Book. I like books that are pretty for me to look at and fun for me to read too.

piratecat we only do 1 story/book at bedtime, but both of my kids are allowed to stay up and read to themselves after DH or I kiss them goodnight. Sometimes DH and I will sneak beside the door to listen, because one of the cutest things ever is hearing him make up stories as he flips the pages. As for what he reads/loves the Scholastic series "icky sticky readers" which are nonfiction books about animals. Super Sharks is his favorite and he basically has it memorized. We also read a lot of Pete the Cat because I love those, and Moby Shinobi and Curious George because he loves those. He just had me make sure all his Moby Shinobi books were together the other night so he could read them.

We have one Curious George book and he does like it so I'll try some other ones.

DS would read all day every day if he could. He passes up toys for books most of the time. Current favorites: Pete the Cat anything, The Pigeon Needs a Bath, Little Blue Truck, Mustache Baby, Gossie (and assorted friends), Saturday with Daddy (random library find).

It was a shower gift, and I find it hysterical. When DS is having a moment, we ask him if he's have a Bad Mustache Day.

piratecat our current favorites are: Pout Pout Fish Little Blue Truck Star wars golden books OBI_123, ABC-PO, & Search your feelings Hippos go berserk This shadow book my friend got I think at one of those mlm book parties. It's really really cool though. You shine a flashlight through the page and can see animals and stuff. I'll try to get the name when I get home. Find books that you enjoy so you don't want to jump out a window when they ask you to read it for the 1000000 time.

Oh for your kiddos that like trains, we got this book (ours is a little different, they had a bunch of different kinds, but this is the only one I can find on their online store) from the NY Transit Museum store which is pretty fun.

Maybe he'll never a famous writer. Just keep telling yourself that and it will make memorizing the words to brown bear brown bear a little bit more tolerable.

Ugh, J's been waking up freaking out and way too early. He's been a good sleeper for a while, and he usually isn't that bad even through teething, so I don't know what's going on but I don't like it. 18 month regression? (He's 19.5 months).

Is he getting too much sleep? Maybe napping too much during the day? Before the last few days, he's been going to bed at 7:30-7:45 and waking up at 6:45-7, so 11-11.5 hours at night. He will nap at home for 1.5-2 hours at home but 2-3 hours at daycare (3 days/week). Until now, his longer naps at daycare didn't seem to affect his night time sleep or wake up times.

According to Baby Sleep Site 1.5-3 YOs sleep 10-12 hours at night and take 1-3 hour naps so he is on the upper end of that range.

I guess I don't know if this is something that will pass and I just have to help him through the hump (by sleeping on the floor next to the crib at 5:30AM??) or if I need to think about making any changes.

piratecat, no advice because DS has been doing that too. I used to be able to get up and get mostly ready before he was awake. Now he's up before us, yelling for me, and then clinging to my leg while I do makeup and stealing my breakfast.

I am listening to all the sleep training podcasts. I may give it a week or so but I'm thinking I need to talk to daycare about capping his naps. He should also be moving up to the big toddler room so their nap schedule may be less already.

He was napping so horribly when his canines were coming in, so we rolled with it when naps got longer. But he hasn't slept later than 6:00 since the latest round of teething started, no matter the nap sitch.

I do think mine is teething currently - his gums are super swollen. He hasn't had so much trouble with sleep with his other teeth though but maybe this one is more painful than others.
