I know it’s slow here but I’m starting a Randoms anyway because it’s still nice to check in here. I dabble in some other boards/threads but it’s not the same.
Toddler glasses are going okay. They’re pretty cute despite not being the shape I envisioned and she rocks the red, without a doubt. She does pretty well at keeping them on for decent stretches. Based on my nephew’s experience (he got them at 1 year) I know it could be much more of a battle. But it is so mentally exhausting to make sure she’s always wearing them and putting them back on and keeping track of them if she takes them off. Keeping toddler glasses clean might be what puts me over the edge and finally getting on anxiety meds.
The weather is currently beautiful and I’m sitting out on the deck enjoying the sun while the kids nap.

Glad the toddler glasses are going mostly well LakesE has been using the word no in full force since the day after she turned 2 it was like a switch. She is mostly good but there are days when she does test me. Right now she clearly prefers H over me and not going to lie it hurts. I said to H we need another baby one that prefers me. He did with our luck it would prefer him too. Lol.

Thanks for starting the thread Lakes! I really enjoy still checking in with you guys and hearing how your kiddos are! Also glad the glasses adjustment is going ok. I can imagine that it must be a constant repetition of on and off all day that wears on you! Not much new here! M is talking so much lately and melts my heart. Even her sassy “no!” kills me. She’s going through a lot of emotions lately though and desperately wants to be touching me at all times if I’m around. I’m currently waiting at a doctors office to have LASIK and am a bundle of nerves. Because of course I’m imagining never seeing my children’s faces again. Hopefully next time I check back in it will be to tell you about my contacts-free life!

peaseblossom55 both of our kiddos are in a mommy phase but DS has had various daddy phases too so hopefully E will switch over to you soon! I’m definitely finding that M is looking to test boundaries more lately too. She will look right at me with a devilish grin and knock something over or throw food on the floor just looking for my reaction. These kids are smart!

There’s snow forecasted for tomorrow. I’m thinking about switching over to the flannel sheets in preparation. It’s notngoing to stick around and will switch over to sleet but I am excited.

Yea some snow is supposed to come through tomorrow not much.
E is incredibly toddler like lately saying no a ton whining when she doesn’t get her way. It’s so frustrating right now. I need to get snow boots for E this weekend I guess I thought I’d have more time for that.
What is everyone planning to get their kids for the holidays?

peaseblossom55 I feel like dd’s favorite has been “no” since the second she was born 😂 so different than my go with the flow ds. Dd is definitely in a super independent stage right now and demands to do everything by herself. I’m struggling with gift ideas bc she doesn’t really need anything plus all the hand-me down toys from ds. I think that around this time with ds we were still buying the “big” presents we still use...the water table, thomas train set, slide, trike, water table, swing, etc. So it made giftgiving easy for him. The one thing I know I’m getting her is the Hape Waffle Maker for the playktichen. Then the usual mix of new books and art supplies. Oh! Her own magazine subscription. Ds gets Ranger Rick Jr and Highlights High 5 so I was thinking National Geographic Little Kids for her. We really like our animals over here.

If anyone is looking for a good game we love “First Orchard” by Haba. Ds got it last year when he was 2.5. It’s a cooperative game and dd can play with minimal prompting. The hardest part is getting her to let go of the die.
People rave about Haba’s “Animal Upon Animal” too. It’s a stacking game so probably a little bit too old for her but I might put it on her list anyway since I can’t come up with anything else.

peaseblossom55 how’d you make out with the storm? It hit my area harder than predicted. I was not expecting to have to clean off my car to pick up ds from preschool! It’s melting now but it accumulated pretty quickly. I’d say 3-4 inches before it switched over to sleet and rain and settled. Mh was 20 minutes late which was amazing considering most people were hours late because commutes were so terrible.

Lakes I was looking at the Babybug magazine for M. DS looooooves his High 5 magazine so I want M to have one too. Tell me more about Ranger Rick...I haven’t seen that one before. peaseblossom55 second all the big things Lakes suggested. DS was 1.5 at his 2nd Christmas and Santa brought his learning tower that M uses constantly now. M is getting a Bitty Baby (plus baby cradle and diaper bag) from one set of grandparents and a Micro Mini scooter and helmet from the others. We got her tickets to see Disney on Ice in the spring but obvs she won’t care about that at all now so I’m struggling with what else to get her. And then have to come up with more ideas for her birthday! These close to Christmas birthdays are hard!

carrots confession: I use to get Ranger Rick Jr and regular Ranger Rick when I was little so I might be a bit bias. I’m also a nature nut so ds has been getting Ranger Rick Jr since he was 1.5 even though the suggested age is 3+. Dd loves it even though she’s younger and it’s something I enjoy reading them. I’ve actually learned new stuff from it! It has fabulous photographs, fun facts, short information blurbs for whatever animal is featured, short stories involving the Ranger Rick characters, often times an eye spy/counting/cartoon/craft/etc. Plus there’s a pull out poster every month! I like that they cover more unusual animals in addition to the standard toddler animals. Ds knows some pretty weird animals because of it.

Because I clearly have many Ranger Rick Jr feelings, here are some of the latest issues. Puffins! Horns vs antlers! Desert animals! Different bills!

Lakes we got 2-3 inches I was working from home luckily but so many fb posts on people taking 3-4 hours to get home. I like the magazine idea a lot E had her two year check up 33% for height and weight. They did some kind of weird vision test with a camera type thing and it looks like in one eye she is nearsighted. So we have to go the pedi ophthalmologist sooner than her summer appointment we had to get that checked out.

That camera vision test is so cool peaseblossom55! It amazed me when DS was 2. Hoping the nearsighted-ness isn’t too bad for E.

I had a wonderful day right up until the evening trip to the ER to get dd stitches 😭 she fell off the couch and landed face first so the frame of her glasses split her eyebrow. She was a rockstar and ended up with three stitches. Also positive, toddler glasses are indestructible.
I’m kind of worried she’s going to end up with a pirate eyebrow though.

Lakes oh no! Glad DD is ok. Her eye is decently swollen but she doesn’t seem to care and is leaving her bandage alone. She also just said she had to poop on the potty and then did so! 🎉🎉 But I really don’t want to think of potty training again...but then no more diapers...hmmm...

Aww poor baby Lakes! Sounds like a stressful night. Glad she seems ok today. And omg to potty training again. I’m still recovering from the first round! But that’s awesome that she’s showing the awareness!

So Lakes E will be joining your DD in the glasses club. We had the appointment today. I feel so sad and disappointed I don’t know why. They say it’s because she was a premie I just think she inherited my crappy vision. Lol What glasses type did you get? We were told to get miraflex. Which seems fine to me. Did dad have issues with wanting to wear then and keep them on?

Noooooo peaseblossom55! I’m sorry you have to go through the hassle of baby glasses. Your feelings are valid, I felt the same way. Obviously I’d do whatever for dd’s health but glasses just made me irrationally sad for some reason. Mostly because the extra hassle of appointments and money but also slightly worried about how’d she would look. The good news is, she looks freaking adorable. 1. If you have Facebook, join the “For Little Eyes” group. It was helpful for me to see kids in different styles and people frequently ask questions there for problems that arise so I know it will be helpful if I encounter any issues. 2. I was also told Miraflex but ended up with DilliDalli. They are very similar. I think DilliDalli has more styles/shapes for really young kids? It’s what our optician preferred/carried. These seem to be the two most popular brands for little kids. 3. Dd’s glasses are DilliDalli Gummy Bear. Originally I wanted Cookie Dough or Cutie Pie. I also see Tutti Fruitti recommended a lot in the fb group. BUT her face is so tiny that many of the styles didn’t come in her size plus something about her bridge being wide limited my style options. 4. Find an optician that is familiar with fitting kids. Many places do not have the experience. Two places I called straight up told me that they could not help me. My plan was to figure stuff out with the optician for the first year and then eventually I’ll feel comfortable with the measurements etc that in the future I can order different frames/styles for cheap online and have them filled by him. I’m glad I did this because I would have ordered one of the styles that didn’t fit her face well. 5. The Anti-Reflective coating is worth it. 6. Dd has been pretty good about keeping them on. The first two weeks were tough but they’re at an age that bribery works. I would say things like “oh, you want to play outside? You need to wear your glasses to play outside” etc. She’d give me pretty decent stretches with that and they just kept getting longer. Keeping her busy was essential in the beginning. And still is depending on her mood or how tired she is. I also tell her that she has to bring them to me and not just leave them somewhere. My sil has an awful time keeping them on my nephew but he got his at one year. 7. She hated the strap so I didn’t use it in the beginning but now I am. We do so many things outside of the house that I was worried about losing them in the leaves or having a kid step on them at circle time etc. Most of the time if she has the strap on she’ll just pull them down. Every once in awhile she’ll pull them up and off but it gives me a few extra seconds to react. I felt like I was helicopter parenting in the beginning (it’s only been one month, lol) and that’s not my style. The strap has helped lessen my glasses anxiety. 8. Cautionary tales: day care took my nephew for a walk in one of those strollers that seats 6 kids. He took his glasses off and threw them. They didn’t notice. Luckily they were found hours later by a good samaritan who inquired at the day care. His glasses are over $500 because sil has no chill. They now have an agreement with daycare that he doesn’t wear them for outside activities. We also don’t let dd wear them in the car. Mh forgot the other weekend and dd tried to eat them and scratched the heck out of her lenses. She just got new ones today. I’m still pissed at mh about that. 9. Teach her to yell “No!” when other kids try to grab her glasses. Unfortunately this has happened to us several times. Dd is getting assertive with saying no and side stepping the grabber. I’m proud of her. 10. I feel like I need a #10. I’ll have to jump on tapa and add an adorable picture. PDQ POOF

LakesYes I joined the fb group. I feel irrationally sad too. Thank you for your post. It’s been so helpful as I navigate this new world. I feel bad for E too because she is not going to be happy with this all. She hates things on her face even in her nicu days she would try to pull the tubes off her face lol. I have her going to see someone for fitting in Saturday. I hope it goes well.

I have her going to see someone for fitting in Saturday. I hope it goes well. I think at this age they understand they can see better with the glasses. DD's vision is within the realm of normal but her left eye started crossing, one of the common side effects for her condition is double vision when the eye crosses. I could tell she was frustrated when her eye took a second to straighten so I think she was experiencing that. Her prescription makes her brain/eye muscle communication work less. This morning she asked for her glasses so I think she gets it. A crossed eye (strabismus) can turn into a lazy eye (amblyopia) which would affect her vision and give her a weak eye since her brain would stop using that one.
