I learned that your placenta might not come out on its own and the doctor might have to go in and get it... With their hand! I'm actually glad I didn't know that prior to labor. I'm terrified of this happening to me. My mom had a manual removal of placenta done to her when delivering my sister, without any anesthesia or epidural...her first and my first L&Ds were identical, so I'm worried my second one is going to follow in her footsteps. Do you mind me asking - how was recovery from that? Did you loose a lot of blood or have any issues? My mom almost needed a transfusion, so I'm just wondering what it's like for others.

My recovery was fine. She was my first so I had nothing to compare it to. I also had the epidural so it honestly wasn't that bad, I was just shocked when the doctor told me what she had to do.

I don't even remember how mine came out. I just remember my husband saying, "WHAT IS THAT?!?!?" And the doctor saying, "Her placenta."

jrun2013 Thanks for the info and so glad your recovery was okay! That makes me feel better. My mom was really traumatized from it - probably because of no epidural. This is graphic, but she said the doctor's arm was in to his elbow...and I'm just sitting here like...omg, omg, omg. I will definitely get an epidural - so if it has to happen, hopefully I wouldn't feel anything, like your experience.
