Does anyone do the keto diet here? I tried to look in the other thread but it's like 150 pages lol.
Anyways, I'm thinking of starting the keto lifestyle and wanted to see if anyone wanted to do it with me.
I found a YouTuber that has really inspired me and I have been doing a bit of research to get prepared.
I've done the Atkins diet in the past with decent results so I'm excited to try this more modified, less protien focused, healthier diet.
Anyone interested?

I just watched The Magic Pill on Netflix and it's all about the benefits of eating low carb/high fat.

wildhoney, I just watched this last night which is why I'm also here searching for threads about it hahahah. I feel like I am going to do modified. I do think it's a good idea in general to cut highly processed carbs like pasta and bread. But I'm still unconvinced about the whole fruit thing. To me, the movie was saying to get back to a diet of real, natural foods so I do have a hard time with something telling me that ranch dressing and breakfast sausage are a better choice than a banana. Lol. But I am interested in experimenting and learning and finding what works for me so here I am lol.

Limiting your fruit intake will help you to lose weight faster, but I don't think it's unhealthy to eat fruit obvs. I'm trying to rid my house of all that crap too. My kids are so addicted to crackers, pretzels, and goldfish. I'm going to try to replace those snacks with nuts, fruit, and whole fat Greek yogurt. For me though, I probably won't be eating much fruit until I've lost some of the weight I want to lose.

Speaking or Ranch dressing, the first ingredient is vegetable oil. I'm going to try to make my own from a Pinterest recipe I found.

wildhoney yes it will be 2 weeks Monday and I've lost 6 lbs! I'm sure it's mostly water weight but I'm not mad lol. I haven't seen the show/documentary that you're talking about. I have mostly just read alot of articles and follow some ppl in YouTube. So far I feel like this is going to be very successful for me. I'm not having trouble sticking to it and the food is delicious. Way better than when I did WW and starved all the time lol.

Good for you Kida, keep it up! I don't necessarily have/ want to lose weight, I mean 5-10 lbs would be nice but that's about as far as I have to go. I'm thinking of it more for the benefits of headache, fatigue, bloat, etc. for myself. So.... for lunches this week my plan was turkey meatballs and a side salad (with avocado and eggs on it). I just tried making my usual meatballs but without the panko. OMG they completely spread out into saucers haha. They look so nasty. I guess they taste ok though. Then I went to make my usual glaze and realized every freaking ingredient is sugar/ carbs- honey, sriracha, soy, sesame oil. And then I thicken it with cornstarch. I'm like son of a bitch. I made it anyways this week as I ease myself into it but next week I'll have to find a replacement sauce. What the heck can thicken a sauce without cornstarch or flour?

Kida Damn, that's awesome about the weight. Even if it is just water weight, I bet it feels good to see it on the scale.

I definitely eased myself into it the first week. For the meatballs, to hold them together, I've seen ppl use crushed pork rinds instead of breadcrumbs. As far as thickener, I'm not sure, I know you can use coconut flour, I don't know if it thickens but it might be a decent substitute for other things.

Every time I use it, the recipe fails...hard!! We do keto part time (like one week on per month or a couple days a week). I’m wary of long term in terms of kidney/pancreas health. Meatballs I usually hold together with flax meal though. It works fine. (And most of the time an egg, so they are really mini meatloafs).

I'm doing this in hopes it will help me get pregnant. I also only have about 10 pounds to lose, but I've read a lot about keto and fertility. I'm willing to try anything at this point.
My plan is to have a protein drink mixed with coffee for breakfast, salad with chicken for lunch, and some type of meat with veggies for dinner. The hardest part I think will be the no snacking. They say you aren't really supposed to snack on keto! I have always been more of a snacker than a large meal person so it will be difficult.

Have you guys tried almond flour? I use it a lot and I like it much more than coconut flour.

The keto app that I have actually reminds me to have a snack. What I know for sure is to do high healthy fats, moderate protein and low carbs. That's what I've been doing while keeping it in a decent caloric range and I'm not having trouble with hunger or sticking to it because I feel so satisfied and full after eating and the food actually tastes good as opposed to low fat foods. I also do the intermediate fasting where you eat for 8 hours of your day and fast for 16 hours. I usually drink coffee for my breakfast with heavy cream and that gets me through until I break my fast at 11 am, then I make sure I don't eat after 7 pm. That works for me but if you're up later at night you can adjust it to fit your schedule. All I know is I'm happy with it so far!

I'm a little confused as to what counts as a fat BESIDES butter, olive oil, avocado. I was reading that it can be hard to sustain because you're basically drenching every meal in butter/ olive oil and that can get gross feeling quickly. Like I know when I make a salmon and have leftover for 3 days in a row, the fatty oily-ness turns me off by day 3. Also a little confused by meal plans I've been reading where the people eat lots of salami, pepperoni, sausage. Pretty much any major study will tell you nowadays that nitrates in those are directly carcinogenic and should be avoided. wildhoney, like in that documentary they were basically saying you should eat natural foods, as close to their natural state as possible (chicken, steak, veggies, eggs, etc.) so I'm having a hard time reconciling the movie with Keto blogs where they eat highly processed salami and pork rinds. I'm not bashing this diet/lifestyle, just trying to learn more about it before I jump in.

It's a very easy diet to do wrong (like the ones you are reading). Kind of like all the paleo people that were gorging themselves on bacon.

spicysalmonroll, I haven't tried it, but arrowroot is paleo-friendly, so it maybe keto friendly too. I wonder if almond flour would work in place of panko flakes? I used some to make chicken piccata last week and that crust held up to a light pan frying and bake. Mh has a colleague that went full keto and did pretty well (cholesterol dropped, lost some weight), so mh wants to try it out. I think we're going to start out modified, kind of mixing the Mediterranean/dash diet with keto principles. We probably (obviously) won't hit ketosis, but it will be better than what we've been doing, and I'm worried about being able to keep up with running and skating if I cut my carbs to quickly.

spicysalmonroll salmon is a fatty fish so that's a great choice, steaks with marbling, higher fat ratio ground beef, full fat dairy, things like that. I don't eat pepperoni and salami very often if at all. The first thing I try to do is avoid carbs and if I do get them it's through veggies or something other than sweets and starches. Then I make sure that I have a bit of protien such as chicken, tuna, eggs, porkchop, really whatever meat and cheese I want at that time. Then I make sure that I have full fat dressings on my salad, or baked veggies in olive oil, heavy cream in my coffee, things like that. I'm still learning and I try to eat as healthy as I can.

I did keto, IF and calorie/carb cycling for a period and lost 140 lbs 6+ years ago. I started with calorie/carb cycling, which made it easier to transition to keto and IF. I'm trying to get back into the routine. The struggle for me at this point is breaking certain habits. I struggled with various habits, routines and coping mechanisms in the past, but when I discovered c/c cycling and primal eating, I felt invigorated and motivated, because it was an "aha!" moment and something new and exciting. I was probably more disciplined due to it being novel and exciting and my hope for change. Things like WW and other programs were not sustainable. After reading current nutrition research and devouring books on the topic, I dove head first into it.
So now I know what to do, have done it all before, I just need to stick to the new routines.
