As a college kid I lived for Applebee's happy hour food specials. APPLEBEE'S A roommate introduced me to these. I mean, I still couldn't afford half priced apps in college, but god bless my roommate with her parents' credit card floating me many cheese sticks and buffalo wings. Affording fajita Rita Mondays as a grad school graduate living in my $500/mo apt and working in a waste water treatment plant basement meant I had fucking arrived.

Did you guys have Rax? I think it was like an Arby's... but lord I thought it was teh best roast beef ever. Yep! Also Sizzler, poor man’s Ponderosa. Which is saying something. Is that true? I've never been to Ponderosa but I've been to Sizzler a couple of times growing up. I think I went once as an adult for breakfast and it was just like any other unremarkable diner? Dang, am I still that poor?

There was a Nifty Fifty's in Mh's hometown outside Philly. TIL it's a chain. He's always talked about it like the best place in the whole dang world but there was a fire and it closed permanently before he had a chance to take me. I feel there was a silver lining, given your cautionary tale. I know the one that had the fire. I was literally boarding a plane when I heard about the fire. That’s how influential that place is on me. I can actually remember where I was when I heard about the fire. Growing up, there was only one in Philly. But as I got older, they opened up a couple more. I think there’s three or four now. I used to drive past that burnt down restaurant every day

My poor town in east central Indiana didn’t have Ponderosa, so I assumed it was fancier 😂

Chili’s was ABSOLUTELY peak dining as a kid. And a college kid. And slightly after college for Fajita ‘Rita Mondays. As a college kid I lived for Applebee's happy hour food specials. APPLEBEE'S This is how H and I used to do date nights when we were both working full time and I was in school full time. We'd go at like 11pm and split a bunch of stuff We also used to get really high and go to taco bell. Ah, memories

Wendy’s was a big treat. We didn’t go out to eat often.
My dad is the king of going out for pizza because it was cheaper to split one than order separate meals.
He’d also make you pretend to be younger to get the better deal. I was under 12 forever.

There was an Applebee’s near my college. They did the half price apps and mucho margaritas after 10pm. So we all just sat around until 10 and then had dinner. It was probably one of our healthier decisions in college.

If we're talking nostalgia, sometimes my friends and I would splurge and split a fried ice cream at Chi-Chi's and think we were pretty fancy. Until we were old enough to drink margaritas and then screw that weird dessert, all our $ went towards booze and enchiladas. omg... Chi-Chi's... I effing loved that place. They had these nacho-like things that were like tortillas with some refried beans and melted cheese on the top. So good. And fried ice cream.

I went to Ponderosa on a date once.
Pondergrossa.
My FIL once famously waited two hours for one to open. Just hung out in the parking lot until it opened...

It was the best.
There are 2 left, both in Ohio. I just found this in my googling! It's the best Ohio news I've ever heard.

Oh god speaking of nostalgia... my nanny used to bring us to Chili's all the time. I want to say this had to be around middle school? Anyway, the Chili's salad with honey mustard dressing and then the boneless buffalo wings were the height of amazing dining to me. That has... not held up to the test of time. And in the continued questionable eating adventures of my pre-Connecticut life, there is another place in Pittsburgh called Eat N Park and I used to get iceberg lettuce with catalina dressing and I felt so sophisticated eating salads. I'm going to google what the fuck catalina dressing even is... I almost don't want to know. MH and I were just talking about how Catalina dressing was the choice of our childhoods and now it’s like.... what the hell was that?

And we used to have birthday parties at McDonald's and Pizza Hut. I have no nostalgia for a McD's birthday party but Pizza Hut is permanently stuck in my head as delicious. I eat it maybe twice a year (usually from the Target food area and I eat it while roaming) and then I feel like shit and swear it off. Then nostalgia creeps back in and I return to it. Did you do Book It in school? That is my pizza hut association. If you read enough you got a free personal pan pizza I was the queen of book it. I got more personal pizzas than I could eat. My parents would take us to redeem our pizzas on school nights and they would sit at one table and let the kids sit at another table. I felt so sophisticated.

McD’s bday parties were out of my league. Any time we ate there (rarely) we could only get the “All American Meal” aka a Happy meal with no toy. My mom told us because it was cheaper. We only went to Pizza Hut when I earned my free Book IT! personal pizzas. I’d have to share with my sister and then my parents and baby brother would split a small veggie pizza. Water only to drink. Every day off from school as a kid I would ask my dad to take me to Pizza Hut for my free Book it personal pan pizza. Except that you could only get one topping on the free pizza and I wanted a supreme, so my dad would end up eating my free personal pan.

My stepsister worked at a Chi-Chis, an Olive Garden and a Chili’s. Like, in the past 15 years. I have no disillusions that those places were good. I learned.

There is very little butter in mine. Oh. I'm not opposed to it. I assume my cousin probably ate it with lots because he refused to eat sauce so he got butter noodles.

Oh I miss sitting in an actual Pizza Hut. I point out "sit-down Pizza Huts" whenever we are road-tripping the same way that other people might point out historical landmarks. They had the perfect glasses for pop.

My favorite birthday party as a kid was at Pizza Hut. I remember the server said we were "very well behaved" and I ate way too much cookie pizza.

it was a BFD when we got an Applebee's. And my father talked my mother into going there for dinner once and she was absolutely incensed that an entree cost $10 and didn't even come with soup or salad. We were used to the greek diners where you got soup, salad, a huge portion of fish and chips, and jello or rice pudding for like....$4.50

I WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS. CHILI'S IS PRETTY FUCKING GREAT. the last Chili's experience we had was so bad but it was an airport Chili's and we had been traveling all day and it was a layover. Then we got home and went directly to a charity fundraiser with open bar and so I think DH will never set foot in another chili's again. get Chili's curbside to go and serve it to your H on your own dinnerware. He'll be amazed at your Margarita Grilled Chicken skills.

And Eat N Park gave me some free cookies at the Pirates game last year, so me and Eat N Park are cool. my dad lives in Pittsburgh and he still sends me their cookies. I absolutely love them. DH thinks they are horrible and tries to tell me it's nostalgia. I won't accept it. I had signed up to bring the sweet treat to DS' valentine's party and my mom bought a dozen of those cookies. People there were blown away by how delicious and huge they were.

One of the greatest days of my life was when we went to Pizza Hut for dinner (we never went out) and I got to use the all you can eat sundae machine (wow, just wow) and THEN got to take home a Flipper the dolphin bath toy, and I had actually seen that movie because we’d just stayed with my grandma who was rich and took us to movies. What a memory.
